His works helped to standardize spelling conventions for many words which had multiple spellings at that time. The impact of Shakespeare on the grammar of English is also significant. It is believed that he introduced over two thousand words into our vocabulary. He also popularized common phrases such as “gone with the wind”, “seen better days”, and “laughing stock”. He was among the first to use many words and phrases that are still used today, such as “wild-goose chase”, “in a pickle”, and “foul play”. Shakespeare’s works have been performed continuously since they were written four centuries ago and have been translated into more than 80 languages worldwide. He is buried at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon where he also attended services throughout his life. Shakespeare returned to Stratford-upon-Avon around 1610 where he purchased New Place – a large house on Chapel Street – which was to be his family home until his death on April 23rd 1616 at the age of 52. It was during this time that Shakespeare wrote many of his most famous plays such as Macbeth (1606), Othello (1604), Hamlet (1601) and Romeo & Juliet (1595). The company became very successful under their patron Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, eventually becoming The King’s Men when James I took the throne in 1603. Although we know little about his early life in London, it’s believed that he joined one of the city’s companies of actors known as The Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In 1592 William left Stratford for London to pursue a career as an actor and playwright. They had three children: Susanna (born in 1583), Hamnet (1585–1596) and Judith (born in 1585). Shakespeare had three brothers and two sisters.Īt 18 years old, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway who was eight years his senior. His father, John Shakespeare, was a glovemaker and his mother, Mary Arden, was from a wealthy family. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 and baptized there on April 26th. ![]()
